Yes, I did the same thing to choose blogware, wiki, and forum for my website. And now I am back to the game of searching. This process is time-consuming and exhausting; I like to install and play with every single piece of program I can get my dirty hands on.

I am currently using Coppermine and I simply love it (my gallery). It is powerful, skinable, customizable, and hackable. It has very rich feature sets and a pretty well done admin page. Overall, it is definitely a "A" product.

At the same time I am using Gallery (my test gallery), which has an optional java client that you can install on your desktop for easier upload and image resize. It has a simpler interface, less intuitive admin features. But all in all, it's more compact than Coppermine and best yet, it does not require a database.

The only complaint I have against Coppermine is how it consumes a lot of bandwidth comparing to the other programs I am evaluating now. At this point, I am playing with Simple PHP Gallery from the author of Relatively Absolute website, Enhanced Simple PHP Gallery, YaPig Image Gallery, phpAutoGallery.

I have a few objectives in mind for this time of searching: 1) simple and clean interface; 2) light and fast; 3) intuitive and easy to navigate; 4) some admin features; 5) skinable. If I have time, I will provide a bit of overview late for each one that I evaluate.

Link:
- I found this from Hostcripts.com, which gives me a list of galleries to consider from
- Google also gives quite some sources to look at. Google Directory on Image Gallery

Toshiba Laptop Battery Nightmare

I have had my new baby Toshiba M35X-S349 for a bit over two months. I loved the size, the bright screen, and light weight. But I am fed up with its battery problems.

At the beginning for a week or so, it was all great. Then there was one day that I had to use it for 8 hours or more for work with AC adaptor plugged in. It got hot of course, but it shut down by itself all at a sudden--battery was out.

What dah? I had the AC adapter plugged in! The AC light was green, meaning yes the AC adapter was hooked up alright and there was current going in the laptop. It was then that I discovered that the laptop was running from battery at the end of that day even though it was plugged into to AC power.

It was weird. But I would assume that with the AC power intact, it should at least attempt to charge the battery if it was running off from it. But alright alright, it might be because the laptop got too hot after long hour of usage. I could understand...

Second time, I got shocked to find out that the battery was running low again with AC in. I unplugged the power and plugged it back in. Yeah? It started charging again. How strange...

Some time later it happened again. I found out that there must be some problems with the battery or power supply or the connector. The battery would charge alright for a while, then the status would change to Online, Discharging all at a sudden. Most of the time it would go back to Online, Charging if I re-plugged in the power. However, this was not the way I would like to behave for a $1500 laptop.

I looked up online for possible solutions. I could not find anything from Toshiba's website about this. Only a few forums had posts with similar problem, yet, no replies.

The problem got worse after a month. More than 50% of the time unplugging could not do the trick any more. What's worse was that the battery light started to disappear whenever I turned on the computer. It would turn amber when the laptop was off, yet automatically turned off when it was powered on. Although the battery light was amber, it was not charging at all.

I finally found one, only ONE, post, somewhere, that some nice folks were all having the same problem as I did. I was relieved a bit, knowing that I was not only imagining it for it was nearly driving me nuts at that time.

It appeared that this problem was not known to Toshiba technical support people, although it was common among many people. There could be a fix, but at that time, none of the tech people were helpful.

Now my baby got so "ill" that 95% of the time it would not charge at all no matter what I do. I did the BIOS-battery reset cycle. I secured the battery. I unplugged and plugged power. The battery light just wouldn't go on at all!!

Frustration kicked in... I wanted to cry.. :'S Why on earth did I choose Toshiba? Even the ill-famed Sony had less problems than this.

It was a nightmare. And it's continuing...

Somebody.. Help me..

50 Gmail Invites

Either it's just a bug, or that I really do have 50 gmail invitations. This page stays. So are the rest of my blogs. They are my precious babies, each operating/surviving with its own conscious mind..

I didn't say "from blogging to WiKi." Rather, I said, "blogware". There is a difference there.

To cut that short, I have been looking for an appropriate Wiki engine for my website.

How that whole idea began was that I had been trying to study for job interviews. I haven't get my resume quite together yet. But I do have to multitasking quite a lot (work, friends, parents, job hunting, study for interview, and my precious never ending development website) to get everything going at the same time.

Then I realized, how little did I know about WiKi, and how difficult it is to choose the right one!

I once wrote a blog about choosing a blogware for my site. I read reviews, installed, played with, and uninstalled WordPress, b2, b2evolution, plog, TextPattern, Serendipity, and Nucleus. I finally settled with WordPress. No more hunting around. It's just too time and energy consuming.. Actually I much prefer plog and TextPattern, but I had quite some problems with plog's template installation and uninstallation because I do not have root privilege.. Long story.

I thought I had learned my lesson. Unfortunately, I didn't.

Wiki opened up another big knowledge hole in me. I got sucked in almost immediately,, digging and poking at different choices, looking for reviews and comparisons websites. What I found was:
A list of Wiki Engines, equivalent to 17 printed pages!

This sounds more dreadful than the experience of looking for a blogware!

So far I have tried DokuWiki. It has a very simple and nice interface, WYSIWYG for editing, backtrack, revision history, doesn't require a database. Only problem I have so far is making it to run under Linux when I do not have root privilege. Once again, I am stuck.

I am not going to list all the wikis that I am going to try this time. I have a few more in mind. Perhaps I will write a little review and comparison of the ones I try next time. =)

To be continued...

Fish snack and pet fish

No technology or internet talk for a day.. woohoo.. No quoting on news, either. How crazy is this?

I must be out of my mind.

No, not because I don't talk about my beloved computer/gadget/internet related topics. But I just want to be a bit "personal" today. Ya.. Just a bit.

Once again, I must be out of my mind. How weird do you think it is to eat fish jerky in front of your pet fish?

I am going to take care of my once-beloved-now-been-adopted betta fish for a week. Before I take them over to my cubicle, I was enjoying my fish snack that my friend brought for me from China. Oh, they are soooo delicious. I drooled, okay, almost, when I saw them in my friend's hands. I wanted to bark and run over her and lick her face like a 83lb puppy. I love that stuff, totally irresistible...

So when I was biting tearing and drooling, I suddenly felt weird when I saw the two fish bowls in front of me. Would they know that I am eating their distant keen? I feel self-conscious that they might watch me intensely eating their (father's sister's distant uncle's grandmother's cousin's ancestor's distant great great grandfather's great great great son's long-lost brother's wife's sister's son-in-law's brother's ancestor's ancestor's descendant's descendant)^36... o_O"

WOULD THEY KNOW?

p.s. seems like quite a few people have trouble understanding ^36. It talks briefly about how to optimizing blogs for search engines.

That's not something that caught my attention enough to post an entry here.

While reading, after about 7 seconds or so on that page, some text became links with underline, where they were just plain text before. When I move my mouse over it, it pops up a little note, to be exact, text advertisement, of the selected word.

"What is that?"

It's something called IntelliTXT. In their own words, "IntelliTXT enhances and helps support this content by delivering relevant messages in a user-controlled format. IntelliTXT helps empower users to view relevant advertising on their own terms."

So, after google's text advertisement, there's this form of pop-up text ads. I would say, this is more annoying. A LOT more annoying because when you are moving your mouse, you see a bunch of ads popping out from the screen. I like to select text when I read, this method of advertisement does not work for me.

Anyhow, just another new finding today. Along with SEO for blogs...

Open Source

I have been looking into different alternatives of blogging software lately. It's a hassle having to install, re-install, and remove in order to try out different systems. It's a BIIIG hassle. Then I bumped into this site..

Open Source CMS: http://www.opensourcecms.com/

Open Source CMS allows you to try out some PHP/MySQL based, open source/free software without the hassle of having to do the installation yourself. You have administrative rights to all those system. And the demos are refreshed/re-installed back to originally state every 2 hours, so you don't need to worry about messing something up.

It's a pretty neat idea, I say! But I still yet need to try it out myself. ;p More about it later.

Blogging choices...

I think I am doomed...

At first, I knew about xanga. It was cool, I said. You can customize the skin and stuff. And it's easy to setup. But for the pretty look, I paid for the premium membership.

Then I tried blogger. I said, this is cooler! Google acquired blogspot, so now it's free, and it has almost all the features I liked from xanga. Oh, except there aren't as many skins out there for blogger than for xanga. But hey, it's free, what do you expect?

Then I decided to explore more. I need something with categories, like in Gizmodo, so I can browse through easier. I want something with different access level, like some posts can only be viewed by certain members. I had a fairly clear picture in mind in terms of what I would want.

Then I did some research on Google on alternatives. To my surprise, there are more than a dozen choices out there! A few I found that are most popular are: Movable Type, pMachine, b2evolution, WordPress, TypePad, Nuclues, etc.

This is overwhelming! I don't know if I want to try all of them before deciding, but now it seems that to make a critical and picky choice like I usually do, I HAVE TO try every single one..

*sigh.. Anybody already done comparison on them?

I found one website that comments on comparisons of some of them:
How To Blog

More reviews will come later, after I try some of them.

To be continued...

Update - more sites with reviews and comparisons:
- Blogware Choice

World's First Hypo-Allergenic Cats

I loooove cats. I always do. I love them 100x more than dogs! Well, that's exaggerating, just about 2x as much. I used to have over 20 cats at home at one point when I was little. We had three mama cats with 14 little kittens running around, and other papa cats napping everywhere...

I miss those good old days. I can't have any cats now. I can't even stay with a doggie for too long, because I developed allergy to my pets!

That is ridiculous! But I am just one of those million pet lovers who suffer from their "love" ones' presence. *sigh. This world is indeed not fair..

And I happened to read about this world's first hypo-allergenic cats developed by ALLERCA Inc. Is it a good alternative? Good solution? I have no idea! Cats are becoming products this way, like dog food, or the car you are driving, the mug you are holding... Can you imagine what it means when cats are becoming chicken and cows? That their sole purpose of existence, is to be produced then "consumed?"

Grr.. I don't like that idea. My cats are not stuff animals. I love them because they are like us, born naturally as living beings, have unqiue personalities, can get sick, make us mad and make us happy.

iRiver H300

For anyone who is interested in mp3 player news, this one is a cannot-miss item. It's finally in US market after much anticipation. :)

iRiver H300 series features:
… Holds up to 1,200 hours of digital music
… Up to 40GB** of internal storage
… Large vivid color display
… Ultra-fast USB 2.0 transfers (up to 40 times faster than USB 1.0)
… Supports secure transfers from Windows Media Players
… Built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery
… Up to 16 hours of battery life
… Supports MP3, WMA, ASF, OGG and WAV music files
… Supports JPEG and BMP image files
… Integrated FM tuner
… Built-in voice recorder
… Intuitive music navigation
… Real-time MP3 encoding (no PC required)
… Store or transfer files of any type
… Enhanced 3D audio
… Line-in and Line-out jacks
… Upgradeable to future formats and features
… Dimensions: 2.4" x 0.9" x 4.0"
… Weight: 6.9 ounces

I have a pretty iPod 3G myself and I am still pretty much in love with it. But iRiver H300 makes my hands itch a bit and want to get my hands on one. What attracts me the most about iRiver over iPod (from spec) is its color screen, 2x battery life, and support for JPEG images.

Will it become as big as iPod? I don't know...

Related links:

iRiver H300 Series Officially Announced (from Gizmodo)

iRiver H300 series 'PC-free' USB transfers (from dpreview.com)

Sony Qualia Q017-MD1 MD Player

So I saw this new MD. News - Engineer Builds Robot That Walks on Water

Sometimes I wonder what our future would be. Here is just another example of a science fiction creation coming to life.

So what do we have now? Cloning animals and human, robots that patrols in malls, robots that stands on water, and robots that can "fight." We also got software and mechanic stores that can create prototypes of almost any creation you make, and an email system that might potentially replace all detectives' jobs and how our credit would be determined.

Tomorrow is unimaginable. Too many secret developments going around us. Every invention becomes a shock to some, while some say "I knew it!" so loudly that it shocks their pets and neighbor. Ya.. Okay, I lied. I never get up that early. But it felt like 6am in the morning. I found something in my Yahoo inbox that I wanted to forward to a few friends to share. To be exact, THREE.

I was brought to a page like this:

Aww. I told myself. So Yahoo! is doing something about spam control now. Good for them... The one I got before was nastier than this though...

So I typed in that character string of whatever that I thought I saw.. And..

Hm...

Posted by Hello

Yeah?! More?

It's 6am! I wasn't awake for this yet!!

So I ended up sending that mail later.. like.. 3 hours later, when I was more awake to recognize those wiggly strings...

Captcha

A captcha (an acronym for "completely automated public Turing test to tell computers and humans apart") is a type of challenge-response test used in computing to determine whether or not the user is human. The term was coined in 2000 by Luis von Ahn, Manuel Blum, and Nicholas J. Hopper of Carnegie Mellon University, and John Langford of IBM. A common type of captcha requires that the user type the letters of a distorted and/or obscured sequence of letters or digits that appears on the screen.

Quoted from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Read more information about CAPTCHA Project, Captcha Project Home Page

What Might Kids Do Next?

Posted by Hello

Remember in all those movies where people make crazy stuff?

That is not too far from reality given the new software and eMachineShop. Well, Google picked it up from its crawling! Thumbs up to Google.

Today I brought more fun and news about that.

At the time when my good friend Josh and I were playing with the hex editor trying to find out all smiley/motio and keywords, of course we did not stop just right there. Our curiosity brought us further to the smiley images. We discovered that you can modify those smiley images quite easily and even modify auto-expand keywords, too. However, we encountered problems changing the .exe, since neither of us has done this before. =|

Josh did a nice write up about modifying smiley images. Hello+Picasa fans can't miss this one.

image from Josh's blog:

Cloning Your Pets?
Posted by Hello

What Does YOUR Name Mean?

I found my name Sandy has the following meanings...

Meaning: The protector and helper of mankind.
Origin: 	English
Alternatives: Alasdair (Scottish), Alastair (Scottish), Alejandro (Spanish), Alekos (Greek), Aleksandr (Russian), Alessandro (Italian), Alexandre (French), Alexei (Russian), Alexio (Portuguese), Alexis, Alexius, Alistair (Scottish), Alister, Allister (Scottish), Alsand
Nicknames: Alec, Alex, Alik, Alix, Lex, Sacha (French), Sandie, Sandor (Hungarian), Sascha (German), Sasha (Russian), Zander.

Meaning: The defender, or helper of mankind. From Dave.
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson went on a camping trip in Marbella. As they lay down for the night, Holmes said:
"Watson, look up into the sky and tell me what you see."
Watson said, "I see millions and millions of stars".
"And what does that tell you?", asked Holmes.
Watson thought for a moment then said, "Astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Theologically, it tells me that God is great and that we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, it tells me that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. What does it tell you?"
Holmes replied, "Watson, you idiot. Someone has stolen our tent."

- Quote from Marbella to Humour. There are cheap, flashy toys you can buy with your funny money.

Catch number one: You must pay rent on your desk. The rent turns out to be a significant amount of the funny money.

Catch number two: You can save up and buy your desk. This takes several weeks of saving. After you've bought your desk, you no longer pay rent, so you've got more money each week.

Catch number three (my favorite): After you've bought your desk, you can buy another student's desk. They must pay you rent (unless they save up and buy the desk).

What's funny is that the same thing happens every year - the boys blow all their money on the flashy toys, while the girls all save up and buy their desks. Then the girls buy the boys' desks. Then the girls buy all the best goodies. The boys get outraged at having to pay rent to a girl, and that the girls have all the money."

Smiley and Auto Expand Keyword for Hello

Are you a user of Hello and Picasa? If you are, I bet you are just as thirsty for all smilies/emoticons as I am.. =D

Ever since the first time I saw a smiley (emoticon) falling from Hello, I had been trying with a couple friends to figure out all the emoticons and auto-expand keywords for the program. We always got excited when we stumbled upon a new smiley or keyword... We were like a bunch of children finding precious stones from our sand playing.. ;)

We wanted to explore more, to find all the keywords! But nothing showed up from Google, and nothing new showed up from Hello's support forum...

Well, we had our fun with our brutal force method. ;) And we finally advanced to the method by looking at the executable (inspired by
Hello Application Oddity by Keith Horowitz).

Motios/Smilies/Emoticon (Hello refers as Motio):

heart <= 'love', 'heart', 'xo', 'hearts', 'cloverleaf' (cloverleaf actually contains the word "love", that's why...)
:(    <= ':(', ':-(', ';(', '=('
>:)   <= '^:)', '>:)'
:|    <= ':|'
:)    <= ':)', ':-)', '=)', ';)'

(Edited on Jan. 18th, 2005
Just checked today with build 651, new ones are here!

LOL   <= 'lol'
:o    <= ':O', ':o'
;)    <= ';)'
:p    <= ':P', ':p'

That's it for now.. )

Auto-expand keywords (in random):
b => Bye! / See ya!
c => Awesome! / Cool!
h => Hi! / Howdy / Hello!
k => ok / okay
l => lol
n => No / Nope
y => Yep / Yes
bfn => Bye for Now
brb => Be back in a minute / Be right back
md => Mos Def! / Most Definitely
np => No Problem
ty => Thanks! / Thank you

And for now, I think we have JUST found everything there... Yap, I found a bug in hello already, HUGE bug. It always uses IE to open up links and web sites, which in fact, it should use default browser instead. From there you know those programmers favor IE. It sucks.

One trick I learned about photo posting from hello though, is to use "||" without double quotes to queue picture postings. Good job, hello. Too bad that queue feature is not very apparently to normal users.

Something fun I just found out from hello. If you type in the word "love" or smiley like :) :( or ;) and so on, cute little smiley icons drop down in your picture screen. I wonder what other "keywords" are out there...

Let me know if you have any new discoveries.. ;)

First day of blogger

I've been using xanga for a while now.. I even got the premium membership and downloaded that xanga toolbar thingie, but that didn't make me use it more often than my chat programs, cuz I still don't know what to say to the world...

Then boom! Somebody said, "check out picasa and hello, do a search on google for picasa+hello." I was like.. what?! hello? Hello?!! Didn't really pay attention.. downloaded the program and left it untouched..

Picasa+hello+blogger sure is a new concept. It doesn't seem too different from chatting programs at first glance. But hey, you gotta admit that google is doing its magic again. This time, by integrating a bunch of services. FREE services! Good idea, I say.

Too bad that I don't have anybody to share this with yet. I would want at least a few people to help me try this thingie. I cannot just chat all by myself, right?

So.. here you go. Download them.. install them.. and let's start the game..
Add me on hello (sleepikatkat)

hello.com: New way of sharing photos with your friends and family. You send them the pictures instantly, and they can view all your pictures, then decide which one to download. And you get to chat while looking at your friends' pictures. Thumb up, thumb down, or so so?

blogger.com: Create your own web page or blogger in less than 5 mintues. You can even have a group of friends to contribute to one blog. Blogger has integration with hello so you can post your pictures or blog directly from there without leaving your chat program.

picasa.com: Photo organizer for all your photos. It has integration with hello so you can send your pictures to your friends without hassle.
