Yahoo's New Way of Fighting Spam
It's 6:00 in the morning. Okay, I lied. I never get up that early. But it felt like 6am in the morning. I found something in my Yahoo inbox that I wanted to forward to a few friends to share. To be exact, THREE.
I was brought to a page like this:
Aww. I told myself. So Yahoo! is doing something about spam control now. Good for them... The one I got before was nastier than this though...
So I typed in that character string of whatever that I thought I saw.. And..
Hm...

Yeah?! More?
It's 6am! I wasn't awake for this yet!!
So I ended up sending that mail later.. like.. 3 hours later, when I was more awake to recognize those wiggly strings...
- Captcha
- A captcha (an acronym for "completely automated public Turing test to tell computers and humans apart") is a type of challenge-response test used in computing to determine whether or not the user is human. The term was coined in 2000 by Luis von Ahn, Manuel Blum, and Nicholas J. Hopper of Carnegie Mellon University, and John Langford of IBM. A common type of captcha requires that the user type the letters of a distorted and/or obscured sequence of letters or digits that appears on the screen.

Remember in all those movies where people make crazy stuff?
That is not too far from reality given the new software and eMachineShop. Kids can make a design on daddy's computer and secretly send it to eMachineShop. Next thing you know, kaboom, you have a robot standing in your hallway playing with your dog. And it turns over and says hi.. Then it breaks down..
o_O Maybe I am just imagining.. But I am kind of looking forward to that day, though. =)
Bring it on, people. Your new ideas..

Go ahead, talk to your dogs...

That article talks about a dog that recognize about 200 words and has the ability to learn new words. Its ability is equivalent to a 3 year old child.
It knows which toy to fetch when the owner calls by the toys' names.
The article also says dogs have been evolving with human, getting smarter over time...
So if you really think about it, how can say that we are really smarter than dogs?
When our dogs bark, or our neighbors' dogs to woof woof at night, do we know what they are talking about? Do we know if they mean there's a rat passing by, or a cat, or a burglar? I see more people telling their dogs to shut up than by responding correctly, and get their dogs friendly pet on the shoulder...
If we can't even understand 10 words of dog language, how can say that we are really smarter than dogs?
A friend said, "they just need thumbs, then they can take over the world."
Probably. ;)
Hello+Picasa Smiley Revisited
I posted about some findings of
Hello+Picasa Smiley some time ago here as fun. Well, Google picked it up from its crawling! Thumbs up to Google.
Today I brought more fun and news about that.
At the time when my good friend
Josh and I were playing with the hex editor trying to find out all smiley/motio and keywords, of course we did not stop just right there. Our curiosity brought us further to the smiley images. We discovered that you can modify those smiley images quite easily and even modify auto-expand keywords, too. However, we encountered problems changing the .exe, since neither of us has done this before. =|
Josh did a nice write up about
modifying smiley images. Hello+Picasa fans can't miss this one.
